I had the amazing chance recently to connect with Yvette Plummer Burkhalter, the Executive Director of THRIVE Center for the past 14 years. Their mission is to inform and empower all families and advocates for their children with disabilities, ages birth to 26 years old.
The THRIVE Center exists to provide parents with information and training about disabilities; parent and children’s rights under the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and other relevant laws; and resources in the Denver Metro area.
As a white parent of a child with a disability, and feeling that my son and my family have been discriminated against due to that, I couldn’t imagine adding race to that equation and the exponential injustices that adds. I’ve seen the statistics and I can empathize with their struggle. I am proud to be part of this human family.
Yvette Plummer Burkhalter recently shared a statement about George Floyd’s death, injustices, and the state of institutionalized racism.
We are in this together.
I shared with Yvette the vision and purpose for my travel platform, and THRIVE is now the first nonprofit disability organization that has included Exploryst as a Community Resource within their website.
I look forward to continuing my relationship with Yvette and THRIVE.
